Bio:
American outsider artist Susan Crew, was born in Chicago, Illinois, raised in Newburgh, Indiana, a small river town of 1500 people and is now a resident artist at Essex Studios in Cincinnati, OH. Trained in psychology (Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati), she eventually followed her heart into what is now a full time pursuit of making art. Studies with African Shaman, Malidoma Somé, a set of initiatory experiences in Africa, work with Qero pacos, and a deep dive into the psychology of Carl Jung inform her work. Her works have been shown in juried shows and galleries in Cincinnati, including CCAC Golden Ticket, Art Beyond Boundaries, Dick Waller’s Art Place, Art on Vine, Upstairs at the Greenwich, Kennedy Heights Arts Center, The Mockbee, and Redtree Gallery.
Artist Statement:
I paint states of mind, emotion, locations in the imaginal realm. Strong color, movement, gesture, rhythm express a here and now moment, a tapping into the life force, the pulse of creation. Helpful, playful spirits abound. My desire is to make these moments visible. The viewer completes the creative process with whatever feeling is elicited by my painting.
